I just tried going to
http://www.ethereal.com/distribution/win32/
and downloading both the "ethereal-0.8.14.1-capture.zip" and
"ethereal-0.8.14.1-non-capture.zip" files - I wasn't asked for
authentication. I then went to
http://www.ethereal.com/distribution/
and tried downloading the "ethereal-0.8.14.tar.gz" file - I wasn't asked
for authentication there, either.
(I tried the European mirrors listed on our main site, but
"http://ethereal.archive.sunet.se/distribution/" doesn't appear to have
0.8.14, and "http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/www.ethereal.com/" mirrors the site
sufficiently faithfully that the links for the Windows 98/NT binaries
goes to the main Ethereal site. :-))
I also tried downloading from
ftp://ftp.ethereal.com/pub/ethereal/win32/
and wasn't asked for authentication, either.

As far as I know, we don't require any authentication (we never have in
the past, and it's free GPLed software, so I wouldn't expect us ever to
require it); if the Ethereal website is asking for authentication, that
sounds like a configuration problem on the Ethereal site.
