Hi,

as I am about to perform a measurement on a high speed link I have
to ask myself how reliabel the timestamps are that ethereal (or any
other monitoring tool) produces.

I also have observed that many packets are not logged at all if link
load is high and that there is no reliable way to determine that
packets are missing from the trace.

Do you have any tips on how "high" this load can be with a given PC
before the results are unsave? Does it make sense to switch to BSD?
(I use a linux 2.2.17 kernel on a single CPU PC with IDE HD, using
ethereal 0.8.12).

I wonder if you could point me to helpful resources on time resolu-
tion for traffic monitoring with standard PCs with OSs like linux,
BSD or windows in general.

Thanks for your help,
Johannes
