Is your PC running in a switched tokenring environment (if so, you won't see the
traffic in your tokenring) ?
You can also check out with an " ifconfig tr0 " , after starting ethereal or
tcpdump if you adapter is
running in promiscous mode:
ifconfig tr0
tr0 Link encap:16/4 Mbps TR HWaddr 00:04:AC:53:53:2C
inet addr:140.23.2.42 Bcast:140.23.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING PROMISC MTU:2000 Metric:1
RX packets:33002706 errors:0 dropped:273 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:10379010 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

Thema: [ethereal-users] How to get started ?
Please help me with my very first steps in Ethereal.
I have a linux pc with Suse 6.3 and a TRN Madge Presto PCI card. My tr0 is
running in the promiscuous mode. I have just installed
the latest version of Ethereal (0.8.7).
When I start the capture without any filter, at least I did not define any
filter until now, I can only see the broadcast in our network.
Is there any default filter? How can I find out if my token ring adapter is
really running in the promiscous mode?
In the faq, I couldn´t find any question, that was as stupid as mine, so I
guess that somewhere must be an introduction for beginners like me - but
where can find this introduction?
