This is due to an bug in the libpcap library which ships with RedHat.
You have to get the libpcap and the patch from the ethereal hompage. 

So either: 
1) get the libpcap from ftp://ftp.ee.lbl.gov/
2) apply the patch http://ethereal.zing.org/~gerald/libpcap-0.4-guy-gerald.patch
3) uninstall the libpcap RPM (rpm -e libpcap)
4) recompile and install the library
5) recompile ethereal

or:
1) get the binary RPM for your architecture (e.g. ethereal-0.x.x-x.i386.rmp)
