There are 2 things you could do:
1. chmod 4755 ethereal
Probably only a good idea if this is on your personal system
(i.e. a laptop) where it is extremely unlikely that anyone
else would be able to get at it.
2. Install sudo and give only yourself and/or other sysadmins
permission to execute the ethereal binary as root.
For a network install of ethereal, option 2 is far more secure. For a laptop
or home system, option 1 is far easier.
OTOH, option 2 lends itself to far greater convenience in the long run, even
on a home system or laptop, since you can then run anything you like as root
without ever having to leave your personal environment, *and* everything gets
logged :)
I usually install sudo, so it's not a big deal. Anything that needs to be run
as root automatically works, since sudo is already installed on the system.
