which gtk-config just tells me: /usr/bin/gtk-config
It should be version 1.2.3 also, as it was installed with gtk+-devel 1.2.3

libgtk.so is in /usr/lib.
So I entered:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib
