So my questions is: Can we (and do we want to) support any older Windows
versions if the libraries we use don't support it any longer?!?

I'll answer with another question: Can we support older versions? That
is, do any of Ethereal's developers have machines running older versions
of Windows, and do they have the time to support them?

(I don't -- the only machines I have available to test with run 2000,
XP, and 2003.)

I have a Win98SE installation in a virtual machine. But I have no Win95, WinME or NT4 available.

Regarding the support, we might handle it in a similar way as the WinPcap people do. Tell the people that the GTK1 version of Ethereal probably still works on these OS versions, but there is no official support any longer. BTW, implicitly we have already dropped support for Win95 since we link Ethereal with the ADNS library. The ADNS library doesn't support Win95.

IMO we don't need to support Win9x and NT4. I don't know anyone, who is still using them, except for backward compatibility testing. OK, some special equipment like Tektronix's K1297 still uses NT4, so some users might be interested in support for NT4.

Lars
