I'm afraid I must disagree. In my work I use ethereal daily, often launching many captures in quick succession. For this, the combination of the "Show capture options" and "Start capture" buttons is a great timesaver. In my experience, the buttons in a new (to the user) UI are seldom if ever "intuitive." Instead, with the accumulation of experience (perhaps aided initially by tooltips) the user is trained to recognize the meaning of particular icons -- for my own part, I rely as much on the relative position of the icon/button as its image. This discussion reminds me a bit of how many words the Eskimos have for snow, or the Hawaiians for lava. Ethereal is a network capture and analysis utility, so it doesn't seem unreasonable to me to devote a couple of buttons to various aspects of capture control. And after all, if you really desire a multi-click interface, the menu bar is still there. regards, Eric Eric, Bluearc Engineering -----Original Message----- From: ethereal-dev-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:ethereal-dev-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Lars Ruoff Sent: Tuesday, January 10, 2006 5:19 AM To: Ethereal development Subject: Re: [Ethereal-dev] Preference dialog size I agree with Joerg here. I'm coaching a group of about 10 persons that use Ethereal regurlarly (but not daily), but almost all of them stumble when it comes to quickly launching the capture since the time the GUI changed to 3 buttons. Experience shows that these persons (myself included) need between 2 and 3 clicks (with errors) in average to get the capture running. So finally it's worse than when we were forced to *exactly* two clicks as it was before :-) and by the way we came accross the options page. The icons are not very intuitive and having 3 quick buttons is more likely to spread confusion than to simplify the GUI.
