FWIW I've done a pass over the Ethereal .c source files extracting "words" from quoted text strings (i.e. stuff that the user sees) and then doing some (somewhat manual) reviewing for spelling, typos, etc.

Is there a way to automate these spell checks, e.g. using grep to find appearances? 

Or are there too many manual checks involved?

Could you provide at least a list of words often misspelled?
