What about keeping it in subversion but not in the released tarball ?
I could live with it. People who want to build their own debian packages will likely be able to fetch the debian dir from SVN (one of the READMEs should say that, then), even if building a package for a released version.
OTOH, making such a distinction between SVN and release tarballs may be confusing. Thoughts?
