What prompted my inquiry was that a captured an SNMP walk and was searching for occurrences of various MIB values, all pre-pended with the same prefix. I knew the prefix name, but not the specific names, so I was searching for all the prefix's until one of the interesting MIB values caught my eye. I agree that having both a "Find" and a "Find Next" is not necessary, but the "Find" button possibly be renamed to "Find Next", but no matter what the button is called, it could function as a "Find Next", without the dialog disappearing. The behavior I am referring to can be easily seen with such ubiquitous programs as Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Word, ... It's no big deal. Ctrl-N is fine. The current "Find" behavior simply wasn't what I was expecting. - Chris -----Original Message----- From: ethereal-dev-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:ethereal-dev-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Ulf Lamping Sent: Tuesday, July 12, 2005 1:49 PM To: Etherealdevelopment Subject: Re: [Ethereal-dev] Add a "Find Next" button? Unfortunately, if you > want to search again, you either have to Edit -> Find Packet -> Find, or > Ctrl-F -> Find, or more simply Ctrl-N to "Find Next". Although Ctrl-N > is nice, I think it would also be a good idea if the dialog did not > disappear until "Cancel" was clicked, and that in addition, the dialog > also contained a "Find Next" button. > Hmmm, I don't know if that's a good idea. I've checked some other programs and none of them had such a feature. What's the reason to use it anyway? When I'm searching for something, I'm interested in the first appearance. Having the dialog still open will usually get it in the way of the things I want to see. Simply adding a "Find Next" button is a bad idea anyway, as having the buttons: "Find" "Find Next" "Cancel" doesn't seem to be very intuitive. There are some other questions as well, so I don't like that idea.
