this may be a bit too late, but:
I get this message:

The program 'ethereal' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 2110165 error_code 3 request_code 20 minor_code 0)

on the following scenario:
invoke ethereal (as root: ethereal &)
capture some packets, then try to save them.
select all displayed packets.
enter a file name.
then press ENTER.
the program exits with the above message.

note that if you press the OK button instead of pressing ENTER, the program
acts just fine.

this happened consistently.

$ uname -a
Linux manson.home.krftech.com 2.4.19-skas #1 Wed May 28 15:46:43 IDT 2003 i686
unknown unknown GNU/Linux
(I use Mandrake 9.0, but compiled ethereal and the kernel by myself).

$ gtk-config --version
1.2.10

$ ethereal -v
ethereal 0.10.6
Compiled with GTK+ 2.0.6, with GLib 2.0.6, with libpcap 0.7, with libz 1.1.4,
without libpcre, without UCD-SNMP or Net-SNMP, without ADNS.
NOTE: this build does not support the "matches" operator for Ethereal filter
syntax.

Running with libpcap (version unknown) on Linux 2.4.19-skas.

Best regard,
Avner Shapiro
