I'm sure that this is platform specific, because the same source works fine under solaris, as far as Makefile.common is concerned. 



Sorry to reply to my own post, but maybe this will help someone...
It turns out that automake-1.7x is required. In the configure script I found am__api_version="1.7". After I installed that it worked.
