At least one commercial BSD uses it as the default encoding, at least
for Terminal, although TextEdit appears to default to "guess what the
encoding is", and doesn't guess "UTF-8" for the AUTHORS file, so you
have to tell it to read and write files as UTF-8.

I think Solaris supports UTF-8, although I don't know whether it's now
the default.
