the list address.
In most cases a reply to the list would be the preferred behaviour
anyway,
so would it
a) be doable with the current mailman software to change an empty (aka
non existent) reply-to to the list address
According to the GNU/Mailman Administrator's Manual for, presumably,
Mailman V2:

There's a setting for "Where are replies to list messages directed?",
which can either be "poster", "this list", or "explicit address". That
section says:
While the program suggests that this be set to poster, you should
consider the purpose of the list in selecting this value. Lists that
intend to focus on discussion are best set to "list" to encourage
conversation. Lists used for announcements are best set to poster to
prevent unwanted traffic and the inadvertent broadcast of replies.
b) preferrable to most list members?
I'd prefer it, as not only would it reduce the duplicate replies, it'd
also mean that if person X asks a question, and person Y replies,
person X would have to make an effort to reply to person Y's reply and
have the reply go only to person Y rather than to the list, i.e. they'd
have to make an explicit choice to act as if person Y had somehow
announced that they have taken full responsibility for person X's
problem.
I'd vote for ethereal-users working the same way.
