On Windows we could use the native file selection dialog:

Yes, we could do that, *but* I don't like that approach for several reasons, the most important:
How to put additional widgets into that dialog, when there are 3 or even more dialog versions (for different platforms) available, and you don't even have the docs for it? I could add things to the win32 dialog, but I don't have the knowledge to do this for a MAC OS.
This is one problem of a cross platform development, and I would tend to keep the platform code as close together as even possible.
