It's certainly possible that our configure script could check for the C++ compiler even though we don't use it; at least from some experiments with the version of auto{conf,make} and {g}libtool on Mac OS 10.3, it appears to be AC_PROG_LIBTOOL's fault.
libtool - it makes me so happy I want to drive a steel spike through my skull to make the pain go away.
