It was correct, the machines with problems are running standard MS VGA
driver in either 640x480 or 800x600. Switching driver helps.

It is an interesting concidence that I had a collegue report this very
error just yesterday. At any rate, a little searching on the internet
led me to believe that this was due to his using an incorrect driver for
his video card. He was using NT's default VGA driver. Changing to the
correct driver seems to have fixed the problem.
I do not know if the cause is the driver or the GTK library in use.
