Actually, I'd be *very* happy to drop support for some older versions
of the auto-toolchain: It there is a willingness to require newer
versions of

autoconf
automake
libtool

If so, I'd check which versions would make sense from my point of view.
Which minimum versions would make sense from the people with cvs-commit
rights? We might always adopt a policy that given sufficiently new auto-
tools we could check in not only configure.in but also the corresponding
configure/xxx.in files too.
