Ahh. Unix. I haven't built any plugins for Unix, only for MS. While you are waiting for someone else to get back to you, you could try looking at this: http://www.mv.com/ipusers/vanzandt/lib.html I don't know how much is relevant, since Ethereal knows where to pick its plugins up from, and no other application is interested.
