Now to make confusion complete:
on Win98 and NT (the two flavours I use), the hosts file must be in different dirs relative to %WINDIR% to take effect. So as far as I remember, on Win98 you have to put the hosts file directly into %WINDIR% (e.g. C:\windows\hosts).
If you want to "install" a hosts file to the proper place, you have to distiguish if you have a Win95 based (95, 98, ME) or a WinNT based (NT4, 2000, XP).
