I've just looked at your problem and cannot reproduce it
with autoconf 2.53 and automake 1.6.
Which version of automake are you using? Can you please post
a log that documents the problem?

AC_CANONICAL_SYSTEM is obsolete, its new name is AC_CANONICAL_TARGET

I found out that "pro" means "instead of" (as in proconsul). Now I know
what proactive means.
