Ethereal-dev: [Ethereal-dev] API for plugins?

I am a fairly new Ethereal user, but my kudos to the developers - Ethereal is really impressive!
I looked at the Ethereal documentation, and downloaded the source, and I did not see any obvious sign of API documentation for developing new plugins for decoding specific protocols. Do such docs exist, and I just missed them? I ask because I would like to write a decoder for the Java RMI/object serialization protocol (I did not see this protocol in the list).
