Before doing this with XML, you ought to at least try ASN.1.  You'll find
that several protocols' descriptions are already done for you.  Wrestling
with the syntax will be good for your soul.  And in any event you'll gain
new appreciation for XML as you consider the task of writing a general
ASN.1 parser. :-/
