That's probably not the problem.

The beginning of the first packet appears to have eight octets of
something, 2 octets of Ethernet packet type (0x0800 = IP), and then an
IP datagram.

Eight octets of something plus 2 octets of Ethernet packet type is *NOT*
an Ethernet header.
