source directory build gives
register.c:

void register_all_protocols(void) {
  {extern void proto_register_frame (void); proto_register_frame ();}
  {extern void proto_register_aarp (void); proto_register_aarp ();}
  {extern void proto_register_afs (void); proto_register_afs ();}
}


Build directory different from source gives
register.c:
/* Do not modify this file.  */
/* It is created automatically by the Makefile.  */
#include "register.h"
void register_all_protocols(void) {
}

running ethereal with the latter returns nothing 
upon ./ethereal -G | grep eth

Both die with abort.
