I have just located ethereal, and looked through some of mailing list
archives. Congratulations on the project so far. Might be able to help (
C/C++ but not UNIX at the moment, lots of Win32 NT etc ).

Reference the discussion on filters I wonder whether you have looked at the
filter dialogs for Etherpeek - I have a demo from last year, and have
gathered some screen shots to give the general idea. 

It works rather well. Picking a colour one can apply a combination of
address based filter, protocol based filter, packet offset based filter.
The protocol based filter is the best bit as non programmers can select the
protocol of interest and display it in the colour of their choice, without
knowing port numbers or such like.
