I have a very ugly draft of this done.

I have just been informed (last week) that my office is going to work me  
hard for the next month, so I will not have any free time to help out in
the near term. However, I do want to release this so you guys can take a
look at it. It is not the way I wanted it to be, but it works. Something
I meant to fix was an option for striping out terminal control chars used
in telnet negotation. But it should still be useable. It's on my laptop
right now, and I need to get it off. Look for the patch over the next few
days..
