Actually, this was fixed as a side-effect of the big change in rev 37171.

Porting that, plus 37341 and and 37413, is overkill; I've checked in the very
small part of the change that fixes the problem, modified as necessary to work
in 1.6.x, in rev 41348.  I've scheduled that for the 1.4 branch as well.
